Tips for searching the dictionary for Spanish words
Spanish is a gender specific language, for example it uses the same word for boys and girls by changing the ending: 'Niño' for boy and 'Niña' for girl. Table, for example, is femenine and it ends in 'a' - 'Mesa.' There is no equivalent masculine word, 'Meso' does not exist. If the word you are searching for does not appear, try changing the ending from masculine to femenine and vice-versa.
In Spanish the plural is often formed by adding an 's' to the end of the word. For example the plural of 'Mesa' (Table) is 'Mesas.' The dictionary only contain the words in singular. If you don't find a word, try removing the 's' or otherwise using the singular.
Currently the dictionary does not have phrases, only single words. We do have a list of useful phrases in our Welcome pack: Useful Phrases.
Accents and tildes (~) are ignored in the search. Although the meaning of a word can change radically with the use of diacritic marks, our search engine is not sophisticated enough to handle the diacritic marks, so we just drop them while searching for a translation.
In Spanish 'N' and 'Ñ' are two diferent letters. Also several letter combinations such as 'Ch,' and 'Ll' that are considered letters. 'Ch' comes after 'C' in the Spanish alphabet; 'Ll' follows 'L' and 'Ñ' follows 'N.' The proper way to capitalize the double letters is by capitalizing the leading letter only.
The rules for writing accents in Spanish is quite strict. Changing the position of the accent or omitting it changes the meaning of a word. Capital letters (upper case) may be accented or the accent may be omitted. Both 'Ávila' and 'Avila' are considered correct usage.
